It opens with an introduction to the wonderful tradition of poetry in English and lets a number of famous poets speak to this tradition. The poems that follow use symbol, metaphor, irony, metonymy and allusion, and cover life, love, sex, family, war, government, physics, math and religion among the many themes. They were stimulated into existence by events in the life of the author and by happenings in the world at large reported by diverse media. The poetic shapes or forms employed vary considerably and are more experimental than traditional, challenging the reader. Helpful explanatory notes are provided for some of the poems. Altogether, we found this collection of Poetic Onions (tears) and Smiles to be very entertaining, definitely thought provoking, and reading it left us pining to begin composing our own verse and fill our own shoebox.
